Exercising the Back First Thing in the Morning – Benefits and Drawbacks

Many experience back stiffness and possibly pain in the mornings. The natural response may be to feel like exercising or stretching the back right after waking up.

If you experience back symptoms in the mornings and exercising in the morning alleviates them, continue doing so.

However, if the back symptoms persist throughout the day despite morning exercises or stretches, the reason may partially be the following:

During the night, the fluid content of the spinal discs increases. When the body is in a lying position, the discs are not subjected to the same pressure as in an upright position, and the discs are able to absorb fluid, much like a sponge. This is a completely normal and good thing.

However, if there is irritation in the disc, nerve root opening, or other spinal structures, this increase in fluid content and the normal expansion of the disc volume in the morning may slightly predispose you to symptoms, especially if you start exercising or stretching and bending the back vigorously while the discs are still “swollen.”

If your schedule allows, try to perform your morning routine normally and wait about an hour after waking up before doing back exercises and stretches. At this point, your metabolism will have started up more effectively, and the fluid content of the discs will have decreased slightly, making your back less prone to symptoms.
